What is Panch Biopsy and what is its purpose?
A punch biopsy is a process that examines for signs of skin neoplasm. The condition occurs when the skin increases uncontrollable cell growth, often caused by high sun exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Common symptoms contain an irregular mole in a throat that does not heal, or a red rash that does not solve.
A dermatologist usually performs a punch biopsy. They will use a circular device that looks like a small cookie cutter to take your skin sample.
How does this work?
During a punch biopsy, the dermatologist will numb your skin before removing the part of the skin tissue. Once your provider receives a tissue sample, they will send it to a laboratory for a pathologist to review for bad cells.
Once the skin area becomes numb, the dermatologist will place a biopsy punch over the skin’s wound. They will press down and rotate the tool to cut a small cycle of skin tissue. Generally, the sample is about the size of a pencil eraser. They will then use an additional tool to get the sample out of the skin.
